What Is Dual Diagnosis Treatment?

Dual diagnosis treatment is a comprehensive approach that simultaneously addresses substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. This treatment recognizes the strong correlation between addiction and mental health disorders and that addressing them separately is often less effective than treating them together. Mental health disorders that qualify as a dual diagnosis include:

  • Schizophrenia & Thought Disorders – Young adults with thought disorders, such as schizophrenia, can experience significant impairment in daily functions due to the condition’s impact on their perception of reality. Symptoms associated with thought disorders include delusions, hallucinations, and paranoia. Other thought disorders include schizoaffective, schizophreniform, and delusional disorders.
  • Depression & Mood Disorders – Mood disorders can disrupt mood regulation and functioning, resulting in persistent feelings of sadness and an increased risk of substance abuse. These disorders can also elevate mood to manic levels, making it challenging to sleep and relax for weeks.
  • Bipolar Disorder – Bipolar disorder, or manic-depressive disorder, is characterized by abrupt and significant shifts in mood that can disrupt an individual’s ability to carry out their daily responsibilities and tasks.
  • Personality Disorders – Personality disorders can result in persistent negative thoughts, unpredictable behavior, and challenges maintaining healthy relationships. Additionally, they can heighten the likelihood of addiction and self-harm.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – OCD, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, is an anxiety disorder characterized by compulsive thoughts and behaviors such as hoarding, checking, and contamination.
  • Anxiety Disorders – The excessive nervousness and fear associated with anxiety disorders can disrupt daily tasks, such as school, work, and home life.

Dual Diagnosis & Mental Health Treatment Programs

Launch Centers offers various dual diagnosis and mental health treatment programs based on your schedule and treatment needs. Our treatment options include:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) – PHP, or partial hospitalization programs, are a perfect option for individuals needing intensive mental health treatment but don’t require hospitalization.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) – Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) are a structured approach to treating mental health and co-occurring disorders and are less intensive than PHP. Unlike PHP, IOP provides treatment on a part-time basis, allowing individuals to attend to their responsibilities outside of therapy.
  • Standard Outpatient Program (OP) – Outpatient treatment programs (OP) are specifically designed to assist individuals transitioning from PHP or IOP to a more flexible program that can be tailored to meet their ongoing mental health needs. OP typically involves fewer weekly therapy sessions than PHP or IOP and focuses on relapse prevention, life skills, and community integration.
  • Detox – Detoxification helps individuals with a dual diagnosis manage withdrawal symptoms under medical supervision. Although Launch Centers does not directly provide detox services, we can assist you in locating a suitable program that meets your unique needs.

Dual Diagnosis & Mental Health Treatment Serving San Bernardino, California

Our treatment facility uses various evidence-based therapies and healing modalities to treat co-occurring disorders and mental health disorders. These include:

  • Life Skills and Career Development – Our program not only addresses mental health disorders, drug addiction, and alcohol abuse but also equips our clients with practical life skills.
  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – CBT aims to identify negative thinking patterns and beliefs that can worsen mental health issues and substance use disorders.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) – DBT helps individuals improve emotional regulation, mindfulness, stress management, and social skills. This is very popular in group therapy sessions.
  • Experiential Therapy – This form of therapy utilizes outdoor and creative activities to promote mindfulness and help individuals find new ways to experience joy instead of turning to addiction. Experiential therapy is a good option for people who find it hard to open up during individual therapy or traditional support groups.
  • Trauma-Informed Care – This approach recognizes the impact of trauma on a person’s life and mental health, including its role in drug abuse.
  • Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) – EFT helps individuals explore their emotions and the emotions of those around them, including family and loved ones.
  • Attachment Theory – This theory explores how early relationships can shape our perceptions of current and future relationships.

Launch Centers Treatment was a major help to me. The therapists and staff genuinely cared about me and truly helped me to make a plan for my future. My personal therapists helped me to discover where some of my deeper issues came from. • Jenna S.

Launch changed our lives. Our family had been battling for years to breakthrough to our brother. No amount of rehab or detox had made a difference. He was listless, lifeless and helpless. We feared for his life everyday. The spirit of, repetition in, core values, appreciation of life and dignity and respect that we found through Launch are unparalleled. I can say with full confidence that we never would have seen my “real” brother again if not for this truly magical combination. We were and still are especially grateful for his over-the-top therapist. Her commitment to his privacy and success coupled with her unwavering contact with any and all of us is what bridged our 3,000 mile separation from him.
