Benefits of Group Therapy

Group therapy is the process of working through various psychological disorders and mental distress through the use of a group setting. While it can sometimes be used alone or in tandem with individual sessions or medication management, group therapy is a holistic approach that involves therapists working with a group of people and is generally combined into a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses all aspects of personhood or the problem at hand. Participating in this form of treatment might seem intimidating, but it has been shown to offer helpful insights that someone may not otherwise be aware of were they solely in individual therapy.

WIthin a group therapy session, a trained, experienced, and licensed therapist, or sometimes two, works with a group of around six to ten individuals. This tends to make for a more affordable psychotherapy option than one-on-one therapy. While some groups focus more generally on improving interpersonal skills such as low self-esteem, anger, etc., many are designed to target, address and treat specific problems such as depression, eating disorders, social anxiety, or substance abuse. Participating in both group therapy and individual psychotherapy can provide you with ample opportunities for making valuable changes.

Unlike individual psychotherapy, group therapies generally have a longer time commitment, between 1.5-2 hours a session and meet once or twice each week. Additionally, group meetings may either be open where new participants are welcome to join at any time or closed where only a core group of members are invited to participate.

While group therapy contains members at different stages of the treatment process, there still exists security in knowing that you decide to reveal about yourself during a session, is safe and remains within the groups’ discretion.

  • Learning how to avoid behaviors that are destructive or unhelpful in real life
  • Participating in a safe and supportive environment where you can learn new social skills without the fear of failure
  • Learning a lot about yourself because every member in your group allows you to see your misgivings through their eyes. Consequently, this gives you an excellent opportunity to overcome your setbacks
  • Interacting with other people, including receiving feedback from them can help you gain a greater understanding of yourself
  • Gaining the chance to observe, imitate even model the positive behavior of other members of the group or the therapist
  • Sharing your feelings and experiences in a safe environment can help you relieve pain, guilt, or stress
