EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that utilizes distinct techniques, such as rapid eye movements or other types of bilateral stimulation, to enable people to process and get over traumatic memories or events.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a form of psychotherapy that is used to assist individuals in dealing with and getting past traumas or events. The theory is that the brain has trouble managing certain traumatic memories or experiences, which can cause negative emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. The therapist helps the patient to concentrate on a traumatic memory or event while using a particular technique, such as eye movements, taps, or tones, to activate the brain. These bilateral stimulations are thought to aid the brain in processing the traumatic memory or experience in a more constructive way, decreasing its bad effects on the person’s feelings, thoughts, and actions.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy is not merely used to address traumatic events, but also to eliminate negative beliefs and boost self-esteem. It can also be employed to enhance achievements in facets of life like jobs, social relationships, and sports. In this treatment, the therapist and the patient collaborate to identify the particular issues to be worked on and then they customize the therapy accordingly. It is essential to understand that this therapy is not a ‘one-off’ remedy and requires dedication, trust, and the readiness to work through uncomfortable recollections and emotions.

How Does EMDR Therapy Work?

EMDR therapy incorporates certain techniques, such as eye movements, taps, or tones, to stimulate the brain while someone is concentrating on a distressing memory or event. Bilateralbilateral stimulation is thought to help the brain process the negative experience in a more useful manner. It is believed that bilateral stimulation stimulates the brain’s natural healing process, enabling the individual to process and assimilate the traumatic memory or experience in a more beneficial way.

According to the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, which is the basis of EMDR therapy, traumatic memories or experiences are stored in the mind in an incomplete manner. This model suggests that the brain is unable to correctly process and incorporate these traumatic memories or experiences, which can then result in negative emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. The bilateral stimulation used in EMDR therapy is thought to help the brain process and assimilate the traumatic memory or experience in a more positive way, which could then decrease the negative reactions connected to the memory or experience.

What Is EMDR Therapy Used to Treat?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is frequently employed to address issues stemming from disturbing happenings, such as physical and psychological mistreatment, accidents, natural disasters, and issues related to combat. In addition, this type of therapy is also utilized to treat other mental health issues, including:

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

EMDR therapy has been used extensively to treat Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It has been found to be a highly effective form of treatment in reducing symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and emotional numbing. In addition, EMDR is also known for its ability to help people process difficult memories and experiences more effectively; this can be instrumental in helping people to better manage the symptoms of PTSD.

Anxiety

EMDR therapy has become a popular treatment for anxiety-related disorders due to its effectiveness in helping people reduce their symptoms. It can be used to help individuals manage general anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and phobias. This type of therapy has been found to be helpful in reducing the intensity of anxiety-related thoughts and increasing one’s sense of control over their mental health. The goal of EMDR therapy is to provide the individual with the tools they need to manage their anxiety and restore a sense of emotional balance.

Depression

EMDR therapy has been found to be extremely effective in treating depression. It focuses on helping individuals replace negative emotions such as feelings of hopelessness, guilt, and worthlessness with positive thoughts and behaviors. This type of therapy can help individuals to recognize the connection between their current situation and the past event that caused their depression. By understanding this connection, individuals are able to take control of their mental health and develop new coping skills that help reduce symptoms of depression.

Substance Use Disorders

EMDR therapy is a helpful tool to assist in breaking the cycle of addiction. It helps individuals identify and address the emotional triggers that lead to addictive behaviors, thus enabling them to gain control over their addictions. Additionally, EMDR can provide insight into how past experiences are influencing current behavior, and help individuals develop coping skills to better manage their addiction triggers in the future.

Who Is a Good Candidate for EMDR Therapy?

It is important to state that EMDR therapy may not be suitable for everyone, and certain factors may make an individual a better candidate for the therapy. These include having experienced a traumatic event, having a diagnosis of depression, acute stress disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as being willing and motivated to actively participate in the sessions. Additionally, if an individual has a history of severe mental illness or difficulty managing emotions, they may not be an ideal candidate for EMDR therapy. Ultimately, it is important to consider all the factors when deciding on the best treatment option for an individual.

Is it Effective?

EMDR has been proven to be successful in treating the symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression and phobias, as well as being generally accepted as a safe and well-tolerated method. It is important to acknowledge that the effectiveness of all therapies can differ significantly between people, meaning that it is always advisable to speak with a licensed therapist to work out which treatment plan is best for you.

What to Expect During an EMDR Session

An EMDR session involves a therapist leading the client through a recollection of a traumatic experience or memory in a secure and regulated setting. The individual will be encouraged to think about the various components of the memory, like the images, sounds, and emotions associated with it. The therapist will then introduce bilateral stimulation, for example, eye movements, to help the individual process the memory.

The client may also be asked to rate the amount of distress they feel before and after the bilateral stimulation. The therapist will then help the client form a more positive viewpoint on themselves and the event. EMDR therapy typically consists of 8-12 sessions, depending on the person’s requirements.

How Can I Find EMDR Therapy Near Me?

If you are looking for EMDR therapy in your area, you can search for it online with the words “EMDR therapy + [your location]” and a list of therapists or clinics should come up. Alternatively, you can investigate the EMDR International Association’s website for a list of EMDR-trained therapists in your area. Additionally, you can contact your insurance company to find out if they have any in-network providers who offer EMDR therapy.

You can also seek advice from a primary care physician or counselor when looking for a suitable EMDR therapist in your area. They may know reliable therapists they have interacted with in the past. Furthermore, you can also reach out to acquaintances, relatives, or individuals who have previously received EMDR therapy. They may have personal knowledge of a therapist in your area that they can suggest.
