Most Important Apps for Young Adults

The use of technology in today’s day and age is perhaps providing the most internal conflict for individuals looking to maintain health and pursue wellness. It is both a blessing and a curse in its contradictory ability to connect and yet distances us from those around us. While the rise of technology addiction is a subject for another post, there are five reasons mentioned below, and suggested apps in each category to keep that mobile device close:

1. Learning

Perhaps the worst part about technology in our modern lives is the mindlessness of it all: scrolling, watching pointless videos, crushing candy, or liking a post from your second cousin once removed. It may not be inherently bad, but it is certainly not contributing anything to the development of future you. This is why the first category is one that will bring us back to the roots of why technology is amazing: offering incredible, vast knowledge, accessible in the palm of our hands. Some of the best apps for this category are as simple as the Wikipedia app, to reading the newest books via the Kindle app.  

2. Listening

Choosing to listen to podcasts (via the basic podcast app, Spotify, etc.) or audiobooks (via Audible) while driving or otherwise travelling is a simple switch that is likely to change your outlook on life. Not only will it regularly give you access to others’ perspectives, interesting ideas, and keep your mind engaged, it also may just be the change you need to find motivation to deal with that problem in your life. Truly, It cannot be stressed enough how life changing it can be to take time out of your mindless scrolling, and choose to do something productive instead. It may take a little time to find what you like, but regularly listening to educational and engaging podcasts and audiobooks can be huge in the recovery game.

3. Motivating

Apps can serve a large purpose in helping to motivate and track all fitness or wellness progress. Apps like myfitnesspal tracks diet and exercise and provides many options right in the app to see progress or any changes made. An important part of recovery, and adulthood in general is learning to take responsibility for what you put inside your body nutritionally, as well as what you demand from your body physically. There are many apps in this space that will help you to set goals, and stay on track. 

4. Budgeting and Organizing

Of course, a huge part of life after addiction is learning some of those all-important life skills like budgeting. Whether you become an expert at your Bank’s online platform, or you start using an app like Mint to track your spending, the concept of learning to pay attention to what you’re spending, and deciphering between wants and needs is wholly important in each and every stage of life. Just as important is the idea of organization, of getting all of the thoughts that are buzzing around your head down on paper (or onto your phone). In addition to using the basic calendar, take a look at some of the other note-taking and task management apps available like Evernote or Todoist

5. Relaxing

The type of relaxing I have in mind here is different than the mind-numbing nothingness described above, rather, I believe in relaxation activities that actually rejuvenate, provide mental clarity and better focus. Clearly, I am speaking about meditation and mindfulness apps, and while there are many out there, Headspace is proven in its ability to cater to multiple topics like stress, sleep, focus, and anxiety. Listening to guided meditations and sleep stories as offered in the Calm app have been found to be very helpful by many users, especially for those of us who have trouble separating from our devices in the evening and claim that we need to be stimulated up until the moment we fall asleep. 

Of course not all of the apps mentioned above are completely free, however, they all typically have free versions that should allow you to get an idea of the sort of services they provide. Even if you can’t find an app that works for you in the areas above, keep in mind that these five categories: Learning, Listening, Motivating, Budgeting/Organizing and Relaxing are all key elements of your relapse prevention plan, and should be taken seriously when you’re looking to create the sort of life for yourself that supports sobriety.
